Joseph A. Smith, Sr.
Bryn Mawr Conservatory Clarinet and Saxophone Faculty
Mr. Smith holds the degree of Bachelor of Music from the Curtis Institute of Music, where his major teacher was Anthony Gigliotti. He was principal clarinetist of Opera Philadelphia (formerly Lyric Opera Company of Philadelphia) for over forty years, he has been principal clarinetist of the Academy of Vocal Arts Orchestra since 1968, and he is a founding member of the Philly Pops. He also performs frequently with the Lancaster Symphony Orchestra and the Delaware Symphony Orchestra among many other regional ensembles. Mr. Smith is a retired faculty member at Eastern University and is the leader of his own jazz/swing band, The Classics.
